Steve Jobs E-Mail: AirPlay Video Could Expand in 2011

When Steve Jobs introduced the latest iOS update (version 4.2), the biggest addition was AirPlay, a feature that wirelessly streams some audio and video from an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to the Apple TV. An e-mail from the CEO suggests this feature is poised to become more powerful next year. The AirPlay feature shipped in the latest version of Apple’s mobile software, iOS 4.2.1, and it works the way Apple advertised: It streams video only played from the iPod app on the iPhone/iPod Touch or the Video app on the iPad. What you can’t do today with AirPlay is stream video that you shot with an iPhone, or video from third-party apps or even Safari, to the Apple TV. A MacRumors reader e-mailed Jobs asking if AirPlay would eventually stream videos from Safari and third-party apps to the Apple TV

PCWorld: Apple ‘Smoked the Competition’ in Reliability Survey

PCWorld this week put out results of its annual survey, gauging customer experiences with various gadgets including laptops, desktops, HDTVs, cameras and printers. Generally, customers reported high reliability and service ratings for Apple, Asus, Brother and Canon products. Apple, however, was the outlier.

The Fingerist turns your iPhone into an iKeytar, available now

Remember The Fingerist , the guitar headstock-themed speaker and case for your iPhone or iPod touch? You know, the one with the shoulder strap for public (and private) performances with all of your favorite music making apps? Well, it seems that it’s finally available in the states. Indeed, there has been so little fanfare behind this announcement that the company responsible, Evenno, hasn’t even acknowledged it on its site. But don’t worry: we found this bad boy for $150 on Amazon. And if that’s not enough, iLounge has done a series of hands-on photos (see the More Coverage link, below).

Ears-On with the SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Boom-Box

For the last few weeks, I have been living with the Supertooth Disco, a Bluetooth speaker seemingly named after a singles night at a dentists’ convention. It’s a battery-powered stereo-speaker with a hefty subwoofer inside and, while it will never make its way onto an audiophiles shopping list, it’s a pretty impressive box for its size. First, the specs

Virgin officially announces Project magazine for iPad (and iPhone soon)

We’re here at Virgin’s press event for Project magazine , which Sir Richard Branson just called the “first all-digital magazine.” It’s launching on iPad first, then on the iPhone, but we also snuck a peek at the app last night and noticed a line about Android tablet support coming soon. Branson says the content will change constantly — there’ll even be comments, and sharing features are said to be “coming soon.” Mapping features will be introduced in the iPhone version, which the Project editor-in-chief describes only as “all the coolest places in the world mapped by our users.” Pricing for the iPad version is set at $2.99 per month, with the app updating throughout the period with new content and features. When asked about Rupert Murdoch’s The Daily , Branson responded that “this is not a battle, not a war, but the future of publishing,” while his chief editor had this to say: “We’re not similar … they’re a daily newspaper, we’re a monthly style magazine … we wish them nothing but luck.” Virgin officially announces Project magazine for iPad (and iPhone soon) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 10:59:00 EDT. Gorgeous Wooden Case Adds Girth to Already Fat MacBooks

Like the joyfully “heavy” people on TV talk-shows that proclaim they’re proud and “full of life”, you too can celebrate the slab-like heft of your old, fat MacBook Pro with the Blackbox case, a solid oak sleeve that laughs at the supermodel-skinny MacBook Air. The cases, made in Golden, Colorado, are hand crafted and, like the MacBook itself, hewn from chunks of the raw material. Despite its chunkiness, the wooden case is actually pretty light, weighing in at just 1.5-pounds (which the product page says is the same as a bottle of beer – appropriate for something made in the same town as Coors). If my MacBook ever left the house these days (my iPad has pretty much relegated the laptop to the desktop) then I might be tempted. Right up until I saw the $130 price-tag, that is. Available now, for 15 and 13-inch MacBook Pros.
