Purported Pictures of iPad 3′s Rear Casing Emerge

But if the leaked pics circulating on the interwebs on Wednesday are to be believed, we could be getting a look at Apple’s next tablet weeks before its official debut. The leaked photos, first discovered by hardware repair site RepairLabs , compares the rear casing of the iPad 2 with that of a purported upcoming iPad 3 casing. Based on discrepancies between the two, it appears as if the new iPad will feature a larger battery, a different camera, a differently shaped logic board, and a different type of LCD display. We know, we know — Apple rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.

Chinese Firm Demands $1.6 Billion from Apple in iPad Trademark Dispute

Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired Apple is embroiled in a trademark suit over ownership of the iPad name, and the battle has taken a dark turn for Cook and company. Apple might have to shell out anywhere from $38 million to $1.6 billion if Chinese courts don’t rule in its favor — and it’s looking like they won’t. In 2006, Taiwanese company Proview Electronics agreed to sell the iPad name (which it had registered in 2000 and 2001 in Taiwan and China) to Apple for $55,000. But Apple only secured the rights to the iPad name from Taiwan and not China, where the name is still owned by a subsidiary called Proview Technology, and is used in several of its products. Apple used a UK-based company called IP Application Development to keep the transaction from receiving public attention

Canon unveils two AirPrint printers, thinks you should print more stuff from your iPad

Want to print stuff from your iPad, but hate drivers and cords and stuff? Good news, Canon’s offering up the Pixma MX512 and MX432, two all-in-one inkjets that offer up Apple AirPrint support , letting users wirelessly prints photos, docs and the like from their iPad, iPhone and iPod touches running iOS 4.2 or later. Canon also used the announcement to reaffirm its commitment to the technology, ensuring as before that it “will be available with the majority of Canon PIXMA Wireless All-In-One inkjet printers launched from this point forward.” A brief, fully printable press release can be found after the break. iTV rumors continue to swirl around the shady backwaters of the internet, but it’s not often national papers of record decide to wade in — Canada’s, no less. According to an anonymous source who spilled the beans to the Globe and Mail , Apple’s TV set will include Siri-powered voice control, with the virtual assistant also helping in those ever-pressing “programming choices’. There will also be gesture recognition courtesy of a front-facing camera and (perhaps most worryingly) an on-screen keyboard for typing into a web browser and other apps

Motorola wants 2.25 percent of Apple sales, in exchange for patent license

New details have emerged about the ongoing Apple-Motorola drama in Germany, courtesy of a court document uncovered by FOSS Patents . The two companies have been engaged in a patent battle of swelling proportion these past few months, with the most recent wrinkle unfolding on Friday, when Apple promptly removed (and returned) its 3G / UMTS-enabled iPads and iPhone 4s from its online German store, in response to a court ruling. At issue in this particular case is a Motorola patent that Apple wants to use under FRAND obligations, but Moto apparently isn’t willing to license its technology for free. According to a court filing, the handset maker is asking for 2.25 percent of Apple sales in return for the license, though it remains unclear whether this pertains to sales of all products or, more likely, the 3G-enabled devices under consideration in court. Either way, though, Motorola would stand to see quite a bit of extra revenue, especially considering that Apple’s iPhone sales have totaled about $93 billion since 2007.

Adafruit’s Circuit Playground app deciphers resistor codes, helps you remember Ohm’s Law

If the names Phillip Torrone , Limor Fried and Collin Cunningham don’t ring a bell then you probably need to hand over your geek badge. If, on the other hand, those names immediately make you sit up and pay attention, you maybe excited to hear the trio have just released the first Adafruit -branded app for iOS. Circuit Playground is a reference app for makers, hackers and tinkerers that helps you decipher resistor and capacitor values; calculate resistance, current or voltage; convert decimal, hexadecimal and binary values; and store PDF data sheets for ICs. The app is $2.99, but it comes with a $3 credit at the Adafruit shop, so it’s kinda-sorta free. It’s available for iPad and iPhone only, but an Android version is in the works. If you’re an impatient Google fan, they suggest you check out ElectroDroid which performs many of the same functions and we can confirm is awesome

ConnecTV social companion beta launches for iPad, PC and Mac (hands-on)

The old guard’s attempt at a social TV companion just got real with the launch of ConnecTV in open beta for iPad, PC and Mac — smartphones and Android tablet versions are coming soon. The idea is you’ll load up this app while watching TV and find a whole new way to discover details of your favorite content while at the same time share with your friends. The app uses a mic to detect what you’re watching just like IntoNow and links up with both Facebook or Twitter (it’ll also work on its own). Overall we were underwhelmed and quickly realizing that the other startups are way ahead in both release date and functionality. For starters, there are plenty of channels missing and not a single channel number.

EasySignMobile enters the Facebook fray for iPhone and iPad

Several actually, but the folks who create EasySignMobile have gone and made their service a bit more accessible to the unwashed masses with an updated version that supports Facebook authentication. The new feature is currently available only for iOS , although we’d imagine Android users will find similar love in the near future, as the company released its first version for Google’s platform last October. Also on deck for iPhone and iPad fans, the latest version of EasySignMobile offers integration with Dropbox and Box.net for easy file storage and retrieval.
